Sulfamethoxazole is used in the treatment of malaria, conjunctivitis (irritation and redness in the membrane covering the eye) because of chlamydia, toxoplasmosis, and urinary tract infections.
Trimethoprim is an antibiotic that fights infection causing bacteria in the body basically the urinary tract and respiratory tract infections. This drug is prescribed for the treatment of bladder or kidney infections, or infections of the ear caused by certain bacteria.
The common side effects of consuming this drug are: hypersensitivity reaction, decreased sodium level in blood, loss of appetite, nausea, skin rash, sleepiness, urticaria, vertigo, vomiting, peripheral neuropathy, liver injury, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, convulsion and crystals in urine.
The most common side effects of this drug are diarrhoea, abdominal pain, joint pain, bruise, bleeding, shortness of breath, mouth ulcer, stomach upset, itching, urticaria, yellow discoloration of skin, yellow discoloration of eye, chills, fever, sick, vomiting, stomach pain, vomiting, sore or swollen tongue, or mild itching or skin rash.
Administration of Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim tablets is advised against in patients having hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulfonamides; having a history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia because of trimethoprim and/or sulfonamides use; and documented megaloblastic anemia because of folate deficiency.
Trimethoprim administration is contraindicated in patients having hypersensitivity to trimethoprim; and in patients having megaloblastic anemia induced by folate deficiency.
