Quinine is used to treat malaria. It is also used to treat night cramps which disrupt sleep.
The common side effects of consuming Quinine are: blurred vision, change in vision, cold sweats, confusion, convulsions, coma, cool pale skin, cough, hoarseness, difficulty in concentrating, drowsiness, increased appetite, black, tarry stools, blood in the urine, anxiety, mood swings, nausea, abdominal pain, blurred vision, face redness, headache, altered heart rate, increased sweating, ringing in ear, vertigo and vomiting.
Quinine possibly induces abnormal heart rhythms. This drug is contraindicated in patients with atrial fibrillation, conduction defects, or heart block. Quinine possibly causes hemolysis in G6PD deficiency (an inherited deficiency), in the absence of other alternative the drug can be administered to the patients, as the risk is negligible.
