Pyrimethamine is used for the treatment of toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by the Toxoplasma parasite. It works by stopping the growth and reproduction of the parasite in the body. In combination with other medicines it is also used to prevent infection from malaria virus.

Sulphadoxine is used in treatment of malaria prophylaxis, severe falciparum malaria and toxoplasmosis.

The common side effects of consuming Pyrimethamine are: anaemia, change in blood test results, dizziness, headache, vomiting, weakness, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, nausea, skin pigmentation and bruising.

The common side effects of consuming this drug are: fatigue, glossitis, headache, difficulty in urinating, feeling of discomfort, nose bleed and abdominal pain.

Pyrimethamine administration is contraindicated in patients having conditions such as folate-deficiency anaemia; epilepsy; and in pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester, because of the possible risk of adverse effect of antifolate such as pyrimethamine on organogenesis.

This drug interacts with other drugs such as amiodarone, astemizole, bepridil, bretylium, disopyramide, erythromycin, leucovorin, phenothiazines, probucol, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol, sulfonamides, terfenadine, tricyclic antidepressants, and trimethoprim.
