Artesunate is an antimalarial drug administered for the treatment of severe chloroquine resistant malaria and complicated malaria like cerebral malaria.
Amodiaquine is an anti-malarial and anti-inflammatory drug administered either alone or with other drugs for the treatment of malarial infections.
The most common side effects of this drug are abnormal blood cell count, abnormal liver function tests, anaemia, bradycardia, dizziness, gastrointestinal disturbance, altered heart rate, or feeling of discomfort.
The most common side effects of this drug are nausea, rash, diarrhoea, dizziness, headache, itching, loss of appetite, stomach pain, vomiting, or weakness.
Artesunate administration is usually safe and well-tolerated by patients. In severe malaria treatment artesunate delayed haemolysis (occurring around two weeks post treatment) is observed. Though, it is not clear whether haemolysis is induced by artesunate or malaria itself.
Administration of amodiaquine is contraindicated for prophylaxis severely increases the risk of agranulocytosis and liver toxicity. The combination of amodiaquine and artesunate is also contraindicated for malaria prophylaxis.
