Arteether is a fast acting blood schizonticide; it is also called as artemotil. This drug is administered for the treatment of severe Falciparum malaria (mainly chloroquine-resistant malaria) caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite which did not respond to other antimalarial drugs.

The common side effects of using this drug are skin rash, allergic reaction, altered heart rate, difficulty in speaking, chills, dizziness, difficulty in swallowing, shortness of breath, facial swelling, lip swelling, fainting, fever, headache, insomnia, loss of appetite, muscle pain, joint pain, sore tongue, vomiting, weakness, fatigue and cough (irregular heartbeat).

The most common side effects of this drug are pneumonia, cough, dizziness, ECG changes, fever, headache, injection site pain, itching, loss of appetite, upper respiratory tract infection, weakness, nausea, or diarrhoea.

Prophylaxis is administered in daily doses of 100-200 mg. Chloroguanide and chloroquine together is used as prophylaxis effective against P. falciparum malaria. This drug induces occasional nausea and diarrhea at the prophylactic doses. This drug is safe and recommended to be used in pregnancy.

Administration of lumefantrine is contraindicated in conditions such as hypersensitivity to artemether, lumefantrine, or any component of the product; simultaneous use with strong CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and St Johns wort.
