Hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial. It is used in treating and preventing malaria. Malaria is common in continents such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. It is caused by parasites that are injected into the body through the bite of a mosquito. Hydroxychloroquine is also used in treating certain autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.
The common side effects of using hydroxychloroquine are: dizziness, loss of appetite, stomach pain, skin rash, Convulsions (seizures), increased muscle weakness, mood or other mental changes, ringing or buzzing in ears or any loss of hearing, sore throat and fever, unusual bleeding or bruising, unusual tiredness, increased sensitivity to light, blurred distance vision and abdominal pain.
Hydroxychloroquine administration is contraindicated in people who are hypersensitivity to the drug; have a history of maculopathy or retinopathy; and long term use in children.
